About

I'm a sixth-form student at a top-performing grammar school, taking maths, further maths, physics and chemistry at A-level with four A*s predicted. I tutor GCSE students online. I sat these exams recently enough to remember exactly where the marks go, and specifically enough to teach the difference between knowing a topic and answering the question the way the mark scheme wants.

Students I have tutored have gone on to achieve grades 8 and 9. I also hold a Gold award in the British Physics Olympiad, and offer Olympiad preparation for students who want to work beyond the specification.

What gets you a 9

Exam technique, taught properly

Most students who miss a grade 9 do not miss it on content. They miss it on technique: not answering the command word, running out of time on the long questions, writing everything they know instead of what the question asked, losing method marks by not showing working.

This is the part of tutoring I put the most into, because it is the part that separates a 7 from a 9. Every lesson uses real exam board questions and the actual mark scheme, so students learn to write for the examiner rather than for themselves.

All major exam boards, AQA, Edexcel and OCR, at both Foundation and Higher tier. Python is taught both for the GCSE computer science course and on its own for students who want to learn to code.

Full marks

AQA English Literature

I achieved full marks in GCSE English Literature. Students I tutor get my own full-mark essays and revision material for the set texts, not generic notes.

Essay structure is where most marks are lost, not knowledge of the text, so lessons focus on building an argument the examiner can follow and using quotations as evidence rather than decoration.

  • Macbeth
  • Great Expectations
  • Power and Conflict poetry anthology
  • An Inspector Calls

Full-mark essays and revision resources are also available to buy on their own, without lessons.

How lessons work

Exam technique in every lesson

Real exam board questions and mark schemes from the first lesson, so students practise answering the way marks are actually awarded.

Planned, not improvised

Every lesson is built around a written plan targeting the student's actual weak topics, rather than walking through the specification in order.

Homework set and marked

Short, targeted homework after each lesson, marked before the next one, with common mistakes revisited.

Parents kept in the loop

An honest update after every lesson covering what was taught, how it went and what happens next. No vague reassurance.

Rates

Lesson typePer hour
GCSE, all subjectsOne to one, online, 60 minutes £20
Second siblingAny additional child in the same family £17
Physics Olympiad preparationProblem solving beyond the specification £40

Lessons are online over Google Meet. No agency fees and no minimum commitment.

Block booking Optional

Lessons are normally booked one at a time, week to week. If you would rather commit to a run, six lessons can be booked and paid for together with your slot held for the whole block. Worth considering in the run-up to mocks and exams, when weekly availability goes quickly and consistency is what actually moves a grade.
